How to identify Conifers in NW Oregon

Using live samples and photographs, Oregon Master Naturalist Ken Denniston will help us learn to identify each of the 18 conifers native to northwest Oregon. Using a unique, staged approach to the topic, the presentation will include simple ways to easily distinguish each conifer as well as some tricks to help everyone remember the differences. For more information on the topic, visit Ken’s website, nwconifers.com.

Wicked Plants of Oregon

John Savage of the Straub Environmental Center will present some of the most dangerous and deadly native plants in Oregon, including noxious, poisonous, and carnivorous plants. The slideshow will highlight the various ways plants defend themselves. John, also Willamette Chapter NPSO leader, was inspired by Amy Stewart’s book, “Wicked Plants.”

Inventory of Roadside Vegetation in Yamhill County

This summer, using the Geographic Information System, two interns from Oregon State University
mapped native plants, invasive plants, and erosion on Yamhill County roadsides. Students Russell
Barlow and Declan Pizzino will present the results of this project, with Susan Aldrich Markham, a
lifetime NPSO member and a member of the county’s Roadside Vegetation Management Technical
Advisory Committee. Based on their findings, learn how vegetation along local roadsides could be
improved and how interested citizens can help by reporting significant populations of native plants.
